When considering which flooring material to use, color and texture (such as hand scraped) are usually compared to the coach’s laminate to create a tone-on-tone or contrasting look, depending on what the client desires. Other things to consider are how hard the wood is and its resistance to moisture. Harder woods tend to be more scratch resistant and some wood finishes have several coats, which are designed to last for years.

One of the most popular and hardest flooring materials is bamboo. Bamboo is the fastest growing plant on earth, with a tensile strength comparable to steel. Despite being categorized as hardwood flooring, bamboo is actually a grass, not a wood, and it grows in specific climates all over the world. Made into bamboo flooring, it’s beautiful, durable and sustainable. For these reasons, bamboo is rapidly becoming one of the most popular types of residential and commercial hardwood floors installed today.

The bamboo used in Marathon coach flooring is strand woven. That means the individual fibrous strands of the plant are woven together and compressed under extreme pressure along with an added resin, which results in a solid block of bamboo, which is then machined into planks. This process makes strand woven bamboo flooring much harder and more durable than horizontal or vertical bamboo flooring. The Janka hardness test — an industry standard rating system that measures the resistance of sample wood to denting and wear — rates stranded bamboo up to eight times stronger than oak. In addition to its durability, strand woven bamboo flooring is extremely versatile, and can be finished in a wide array of wood-look styles and colors.
